The best thing you can do is to get very good at being you.

Psychotherapy

I conduct two types of counseling:

  •  psychotherapy with individuals in my office
  • lifestyle change counseling for individuals with weight, eating and health issues, either in my office or by telephone (see Weight Issues page)

Psychotherapy can be thought of as an ongoing conversation in which I focus on you and your needs.  These needs often remain unmet from childhood, which can leave uncertainty about what your adult needs are and how to meet them.  To explore these, I focus on mental processes and emotional experiences in an atmosphere of safety (confidentiality) and respect.  We start by addressing whatever is on your mind or currently troubling you.  We explore past and current relationships and events in your life in order to reach a deeper understanding of why you think, feel, and behave the way you do.

Through our conversations you can begin to see things differently, release negativity, and let go of old pain.  These discussions can also further your understanding of why others in your life interact with you as they do and why particular patterns--of emotions, relationships, and conflicts--continue to repeat themselves.  Achieving this deeper awareness allows you to begin having healthier, more rewarding experiences.   This is the goal of psychotherapy:  to apply your new understanding to making first small, and then greater, changes in your behavior and therefore to improve your life.

My goal is to offer you compassionate guidance for improving your life and achieving personal growth and greater self-esteem.   My role is to be an accepting and nonjudgmental guide.  As you are able to be more emotionally open, we can discover together what is authentic, joyful, and powerful inside you.  It is an honor for me to contribute some small part to my clients' healing, and I am deeply moved that clients are willing to share their tenderness and be vulnerable with me.   If this type of therapy sounds like something you would be comfortable with, please call me at (919)471-6501, ext. 8.
