The greatest success is successful self-acceptance.  - Ben Small

My Background

I have always been interested in psychological issues, which led to 10 years of working in the Psychology Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  While there I studied social behavior in young children and gained an appreciation for the formative nature of those years and their later influence on us as adults.

In graduate school I worked with people struggling with mental illness, as well as developed and ran a group to support individuals dealing with separation and divorce.

After receiving my Master’s degree in 1988, I worked in county mental health for ten years.  In 1996 I was able to concurrently establish my private practice in Durham, NC and the next year also began working at Duke University’s Diet and Fitness Center.  In 2003 I began devoting myself full-time to my private practice.

In addition to treating overweight and overeating problems, low self-esteem, and stress, I treat grief and bereavement, dysfunctional family issues, and relationship problems.  I can work with you in my office, and I can also provide telephone coaching to address losing weight, compulsive eating, dietary nutrition, and exercise.  My intention is to support you in achieving healthy lifestyle change and emotional healing, which leads to increased self-awareness and ability to meet your own needs.  The improved emotional experiences and self-compassion will thereby greatly enhance your life.
